Change

My have things changed since the last time I posted on here.

I read my previous Carpe Diem post and had to laugh at myself a little. I've come along way since that last post....but I still have a ways to go.

I've accomplished a lot in the time pasted:

I applied to grad school, went on an interview and found out the same day I was accepted to Thomas Jefferson's Couple and family Therapy Program! So yes, I am no longer working towards but I'm actually IN graduate school. *cues claps from the crowd* yea i know isnt it great? I just started on wednesday but I really enjoyed it. Seems like its going to be challenging yet enjoyable and not a got damn swindle like undergrad.

I had to quit my job, so I am no longer working at JJPI. I was a lil sad at first because I could use the money and I actually enjoyed my experience there. I'm currently looking into other positions to see what I could do to make money in the meantime as well as increase my experience but I'm hopeful I will find something.

I moved into a one bedroom apt on camups. Its strange not living with anyone after spending most of my time with a roommate but its a very freeing experience already. I think I'll be able to find more of myself and become more in tuned with me and the things I go through.

Overall life is really great right now. I can't complain and these next two years are gonna really shape me in a way that I couldnt imagine.

I'm essited :)

An intense anticipation itself transforms possibility into reality; our desires being often but precursors of the things which we are capable of performing.

Carpe Diem

Something has come over me recently...

An undenyable feeling to do everything i wanted to ever do in life. In the past couple of weeks I've been able to get my finances in order, reconnect with family, start my prepping for graduate school applications and bought a new laptop (which is TRES sexy btw lol)

There are so many goals that I want to achieve, so many things that I want to do and I don't ever want to say I have any regrets about not going after them.

My go getter attitude surfaced after a string of incidents, both good and bad, that opened my eyes to how SHORT life really is. Within one week I celebrated my grandmothers 82nd birthday and learned of my friend's 20 yr old sister, Tini, being murdered. Both women were unable to attain things that they wanted in life.

Tini never got the chance to see 21 and do all the things that a legal adult can do. she wont get totally shitfaced and vomit on her 21st bday. she'll never meet the man of her dreams, get married and start a family. She'll never get the chance to see her nieces and nephews grow up.

My grandmother on the other hand was blessed to live a long life...but is filled with regret because of the things she was unable to do. Her life was consumed with being a wife and mother. Although she has a beautiful family to show for it complete with great grandchildren; she has nothing that she can say she did on her own. She never finished hs or went to college, never worked a job or even went shopping by herself. she never had any true independence from her role as a family woman.

Those two examples is what made me really decide that no goal is too big or too small (I know that sounds corny but thats the best way I can put it LOL) for me to tackle. Of course there are a few challenges that I'm afraid to face along the way; but what is the worst that can happen if i try? Nothing. A door will close on you or not open for you but If you don't try you never will find the door that was left unlocked for you to open.

PROCEED WITH CAUTION

This is an angry post...

Recently things have been looking up at work. They hired a couple new guys aka 'my boys' and their energy has just made the place more pleasant.

There is only one problem.. My supervisor 'Dimbo Jimbo'. When i first started I thought JImbo was cool. He seemed focused on positivity and making sure the work place was free from negativity. He warned me to stay out of 'cliques' and to stay on top of my work. My other coworkers talked negatively about the guy and I never understood why, until i started observing more and listening to what comes out of this fool's mouth.

Jimbo is one of THE MOST incompetent supervisors I've ever had. actually he is the ONLY incompetent supervisor I've ever had. He is the person the breeds the negativity in the office and whats amazing is that he truly has no clue. He thinks people talk about him behind his back and start arguments with him for no reason. He feels as though he does his job and is a beaming beacon for positivity. Well excuse me, but I don't think there is anything positive about telling your subordinates that they can find a job elsewhere is they have any questions and concerns.

The man also has a bad case of napoleon complex. He's just a guard dog and a micromanager. He never helps you when you need help and never has anything of relevance to say during meetings. All in all It really bothers me that I have a damn fool as a boss. But I'm done complaining about things that cannot change, all i can do in the end is change me and my situation and I am diligently working on that.

"Me" TiME

Today was a 'me' day...

it's a day when i just take time out for myself and do the things I want to do.

Whether it's shopping, ppl watching, browsing the web, or working out; It's what I want to do and usually i do it by myself.

There's something about being alone that I really cherish. It wasn't always that way though. When I was younger...not so long ago, I hated being alone. But i was forced into a situation a couple years back that really forced me to be alone...and like it. For awhile it was really a struggle to be alone, I used to agonize over what my "friends" were doing without me or what good times I was missing out on. But i soon got over it and went from being alone by force to being alone by my own will.

(picture of me on my 'me' day)

Someone once asked me the other day about me being alone. Why I like it so much; don't you go crazy by yourself?

my answer? FUCK no. There is no better company than my own company. I can never do me wrong and I can always rely on me to make the best decision. I also get more done and do the best thinking when I'm alone.

It's surprising that I have as many friends and associates as I do now. For someone so outgoing and personable, I HATE being around a lot of ppl all the time. I get sick of it and eventually need my time away from ppl.

To this day I'm thankful for my ability to be alone. I can't stand to be around clingy ppl or people who can't do the simplest of tasks alone. I guess it irks me because i think of how i used to be following ppl around everywhere. All i can say is that I'm thankful for how I am now :)

“You cannot be lonely if you like the person you're alone with.”

ps. here is a picture of me in my workout gear...i promised to put a before picture. I guess i'll put up an after pic before i leave for Miami or after miami..idk we'll see.

Current Events

Just a lil update of everything that's going on.

I went to Jersey to spend the extra long memorial day weekend with Marce. We ended up going to a Slurball competition. Slurball you ask? it is basically a fusion of flip cup and beer pong which equals a mess lol. I didn't play...i didn't even wanna go at first, but i ended up having a good time with good ppl, which included a very volatile boob flashing Brazilian girl named Chay Chay getting money all day muthafukas LOL. We ended up singing along to old school songs like joyful joyful while drunk...needless to say it was memorable on memorial day HA

On Saturday I went to a wine tasting with Nic the other day. It was at this boutique called Totally Posh Boutique. it was tres tres cute and upscale. The clothes were fabulous and so where the owners. The food that was there was catered by this company called Intimate Cuisines. They served lots of amazing food like wings and lil grill cheese and basil paninis...which I ate 20 of. They taught us about different wines and how to analyze them all bougie like ha ha. Overall we had a good time and will be partaking in more 'classy' events such as this.

tonight i went to dinner with Amber and ate at this quaint authentic Irish pub called Kildare's. Even though i ate out (no homo) I still managed to maintain my clean diet. I ate a flat bread pita sandwhich that was grilled with extra virgin olive oil (or EVOO as Rachel ray calls it) that had roasted garlic, sliced tomatoes and fresh basil! yay to me! it was really good and we'll probably go back for the happy hr special.

Tomorrow is Amira's 21ST BIRTHDAY!! FINALLY!! LOL we're all going over to her place then manayunk. I'm so excited for a night out, its been a while.

just say no...

to everything!

thats what this new clean diet feels like. and before you say, "alanna why are you dieting?!?!" I'm not actually dieting, im revamping my diet. Cleaning it up as the name of the diet says.

Clean eating is a way to get the most benefits out of your food as you possibly can. Its about using food to fuel your body instead of harming it. and as a person who believes that the body is a temple, I totally agree with this balanced diet.

So what do you have to do to clean it you may ask?

Im bout to break it down for ya. OK so the guidelines are:

Eat six small meals per day

Eat lean protein and complex carbohydrates at each meal: turkey, chicken, legumes (beans)

Drink two or three liters of water a day

Never skip a meal

Carry a cooler filled with clean eating foods when you are away from home

Consume essential fatty acids each day

Depend on fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains

NO Over processed and re-fined foods: white bread, white sugar, pretty much anything white that isn't dairy lol

NO Saturated and trans fats

NO Sugar loaded colas and fruit juices

and for the least favorite rule...you MUST limit your alocholic beverage intake ::hears boos in the background:: yea yea i kno i kno.. like i said i struggle with this one the most LOL

This may seem like a strict diet but once you get into it you really dont notice what your doing. I've been doing it for about a month..cheating on weekends just to slowly wean myself off junk and still kinda treat myself every now and then. But since i've started i must admit i feel better, look better and overall my health has increased.

I will be posting a picture up here soon for a before and after deal lol My main goal is to gain muscle and look more lean and healthy.

Your very pretty...are you mixed?

The above statement or "where are you from?" is something that i get a lot due to my 'good hair'(fucking hate that term btw) and personality (i guess i act Caribbean??).

Either way, I feel like more and more frequently I find others, as well as myself sometimes, mistaking beautiful components and aspects of black women for mixed race women. Sometimes black women are mixed but a lot of times they aren't. My question is, Why must beautiful black women have to be something other than 'black' to be beautiful?

There are plenty of good looking black women such as Gabrielle union, sanaa lathan, beyonce, Janet Jackson, ciara, Angela bassest...the list is endless; that are not racially mixed and yet still very striking looking.

In no way am i dissing women who are mixed or come from the islands (another thing i get a lot), cause in the end most black ppl are mixed to a point. Its just that Black women need to start taking pride in just being black and not trying to reach for other ethnic backgrounds that are just faintly there in their bloodline.

PS. For those of you who ARE black and mixed, take pride in being black and stop just appreciating the sexual parts that you got. For example: if ur a mixed black guy, don't be all hype about being black only when talking about ur dick or if ur a girl rep black when talking about ur ass...that's fucking disrespectful. thank you.

Plastic surgery

'Had a body, A body that you can't pay fo'/
That mean she had some D's on her but they wasn't fake though'

oddly enough that is the line that i think of when it comes to my body. lol

I've been working hard recently to do total reconstructive surgery on my body. And no i don't mean saving up thousands to pay for plastic surgery. I mean doing it the old fashion way: eating right and working out.

I've started strength training in the morning then running when i get home followed by a nice half hr session of yoga. Yea..i know, yoga isn't my style but I felt like i needed to get my flexibility back and relax all at the same time and yoga seems to be the best option. its also good to incorporate something fresh so i don't get bored.

anyway i also straightened up my diet...A LOT. I been frequently shopping at Whole Food (i can live in there) which i love and I've cut out sugar and anything white that's not diary. I'm still taking my vitamins too. I've never been much of a calorie counter but I'm starting to be more mindful of how many i eat in one sitting.

I'll be posting some pics soon (i got a new digital camera...HEY!!) so y'all can see the progress :)

PEACE!

ps. I would REALLY love to learn how to kickbox and surf. For some odd reason they've been playing the shit outta Blue Crush and i want to learn how to surf and every yr go on a surf trip lol. Anyone wanna learn with me? ;)

Jon and kate plus everyone

Yesterday me and Marce, along with millions across America, watched the season five premier of Jon and Kate plus 8.

It was sad to see how their relationship has deteriorated so much over the past five seasons. The show started off with Jon and Kate (separately) talking about the scandals that are their lives.

As we all know by now, Jon has been seen partying it up with college girls and Kate has been snuggling up with her bodyguard. And my question in all of this is 'what about the kids?'. Originally this show was started as a documentary about the sextuplets birth and first year of life which somehow now spun into a total money making machine. Now the Gosselings have paparazzi following their every move and their faces are splattered on the pages of a tabloid mags.

I felt bad as Jon talked about how he didn't sign up for 'this', and i knew exactly what he meant. He just wanted to do a documentary about his family and that was it. Sure he messed up by partying with college girls, but we can't really get on a man who is married to the devil. lol

Time after time we see Jon being his cool calm and collected self, only to have an anal, over analyzing and organizing wife like Kate constantly bitch and demean him on national TV. I mean honestly i don't even see what he saw in her to begin with. I'm not condoning whatever he did do, but I'm saying she couldn't have been totally surprised by the fall of her marriage. Of course she said she was perfect while complaining that she was alone and Jon wasn't there but did she admit to her actions and what she's done? No.

So what can Jon and Kate do to preserve their marriage? stop filming this stupid show. Yea its interesting to see how a couple deals with managing 8 children but is it really worth being followed by paparazzi? is it worth seeing your family plastered in tabloid papers? is it REALLY worth having your kids followed by a camera crew?!?!

You would think that it would be an easy decision, but i guess only time will tell.

Mr. Revolving Door

Do you have one of those ppl in your life that comes in and out of your realm of existence...constantly.

there is no steady relationship with the person, they just come and go as they please; usually creating some sort of dramatic effect on ur mood, good or bad. Only to retreat as quickly as they came, leaving you all sorts of fucked up emotionally or mentally because they are too much to deal with.

Yea i have one of those. Its annoying to me. I'm the type of person that likes to know why someone is in my life. I like for all ppl in my life to have some sort of purpose. and Mr. revolving door has no purpose in my life but to piss me off. Not saying his personality or anything about him per say pisses me off. its the fact that i just don't know what do about him. How to explain our...'relationship' for lack of a better term. We're cool...but i guess that's it. There is no constant contact, due to me trying to ignore him and ween him out of my life..but there is no way to cut this fool out of my life its so annoying.

I mean can you truly cut someone out of your life that has many of the same connections you have or have the same friends you have? I must admit I've tried to cut someone toxic out of my life but there ass is still there because so much was shared btw me and this other person and truth be told they aren't ready to let go of me.

With that; I think Mr. revolving door will never truly allow me to 'remove' him out of my life. He will continue to be a guest star in my life until he's ready to let go..because I'm sure as hell ready to let go of you.

ps. I wonder if he thinks I'm Ms. revolving door in his life?

Hair, Hair, and more hair!

Recently I've been on a natural hair kick.

I mean I have natural hair. But I'm trying to incorporate more natural hair products into my hair care regimen.

I recently purchased some items from Miss Jessie's: http://www.missjessies.com/products.html

From there I got the curly pudding and the baby buttercreme....WHICH I LOVE! the stuff defined my curls something fierce. It's amazing. I also purchased products from Oyin homemade. I haven't recieved any of the products but I will be blogging about all of them once i get them.

I also have been experimenting with my hair by watching different tutuorials on youtube.com about how to do natural hairstyles. There is a lot of good information on the web I must say.

I'm excited to do my hair in a twist out style so that i can achieve a curly all over look. I'll probably be doing that either tomorrow or sunday but i'll post pics of how it looks!

Vegas <3

I vacationed in Las Vegas last week...

and i can sum it up in one word: Interesting

LOL I say interesting because I learned a lot about people on this trip. I didn't want to go and observe, but it ended up doing so and learning a lot about the ppl around me. I'm just gonna leave it at that.

but other than that the trip was awesome. Wish i would've had more time to do a tour and go to one more show; maybe the Wayne Brady: making shit up show LOL. But i still had fun.

SO i knew that the trip was gonna be crazy. The first day we checked in at our hotel. It was called the Luxor. Its fitting that we stayed there cause it was an actual pyramid and based all on Egyptian culture; of course you know i loved it since I been on my African history swag <3 onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_nxGJHKPU1f4/SbhpZjDH7NI/AAAAAAAAAAw/LokmnRA65dU/s1600-h/condom+cap.jpg">

Yes that says "I swallow". I LOVED IT LOL me and nish got wasted off of these tall ass frozed drinks. it was pretty great.

Overall it was a great trip. I'm too tired to write every little happening in this blog lol

Happy Birthday YANISHKA!

WITH LOVE AND APPRECIATION...

Recently I've been having lots of interesting conversations with people, mainly black people, regarding race and appreciation of culture.

It's interesting to see how many people actually have a love for who they are...and unsettling to see a lot of people who don't.

It all began when my boyfriend and I started discussing how he is one of the few men he knows that would date strictly inside of his race and actually has an admiration for Black women. It never really occurred to me how important it is for your mate to love you in complete totality. Meaning, not just for who you are as a person (your personality, quirks, likes and dislikes), but also having appreciation for you and your culture. I love and appreciate the fact that my man loves me not only for what I have to offer as a woman but what I bring to the table as a strong black woman.

He loves my complexion, my full lips, my big black nose (yes i said it!) and of course this Afro on top of my head lol. I couldn't imagine being with someone who couldn't respect and love these God given characteristics. It made me realize how much i love being black... it's hard being black, but it's something I would never trade in for anything else. Being Black is special and I wish most Black people, African Americans could say the same thing.

Being Black is a gift. Even though we as a people are broken, with a lot of repairing to do on all levels, we also have a lot to be proud of. There is something to be said about a people who survived being torn from their land, lived through the nearly unbearable voyage of the middle passage; only to be sold into cruel and oppressive slavery where their culture, families, and identity were destroyed. Still, through all of that, Black people persevered. They became doctors, lawyers, civil rights activists, presidents and continued to achieve in the field of the arts.

It's a true shame that when people think of black history the story begins and ends with slavery and civil rights. It is with this that I have taken it upon myself to learn more about my heritage which in turn will help me to learn more about myself and my people. I've thrown myself into African literature and history, hoping to become as knowledgeable as I possibly can, so that when I have this conversation again; I may not rant to those that are ignorant but instead educate those that are ignorant.

"For Africa to me... is more than a glamorous fact. It is a historical truth. No man can know where he is going unless he knows exactly where he has been and exactly how he arrived at his present place."

Friends

Marcely and I had a serious discussion last night about friends.

It's always an interesting discussion when we talk about friends because his friends are so different than him where as I have two separate group of friends that pretty much balance who I am as a person.

Recently I've realized the importance of true friends. Those friends that are like your family. I was telling Marce how even though I share a special bond with my college friends, due to experiences that we've shared together as a group ( PKP:) ), nothing can replace the sisterly bond I have with my friends from home.

It's important to have people around you that are like-minded and share the same values as yourself. It's amazing how each of my friends from home can not speak to one another in a month and then get back like time never pasted. It's truly a beautiful thing. With that I'm hoping to spend more time and energy into those friendships that are meaningful and fulfilling...lifelong. And that doesn't just go for my HS friends, but for all of my overall friendships as well.

I've also decided to stop letting some of my friends rely on me so much. Not that I don't mind helping and giving support, but sometimes I feel like a lot of my friendships are based off of that. I've been looked upon on more than one occasion as the person who gives sound advice, the go to person that will be there for you and to an extent I'm tired of it. I'm learning to let those around me make their own decisions and mistakes, as much as I hate to see people I care about go through things that may be unnecessarily stressful/painful; I just have to let it go. I've learned that through adversity character is built and that's exactly what people have to learn... I just can't learn it for them!

Well that's it for now.

HAVE YOU FELT LiKE THiS...

You ever read someone else's blog/xanga/myspace/facebook and after reading think, damn am I as interesting as they are?

Sometimes I get that feeling. I mean, I'm def not on any of these websites to develop a cult following or anything but I wonder if people find what I think or say to be interesting. I would hate to have someone listen to me speak or read my blog only to come away with: Damn that was a waste of my life! lol

Idk..just another thought that had popped into my head.

In other news, today was the day that my supervisor returned back to work. OOOOhhh Joy. He was out for a while driving the van because we had no van driver and now his retarded ass is back. What's funny is that I really used to like him, until he went away for such a long period of time then returned. He's incredibly annoying; with his southern accent that makes him sound stupid, his micromanaging ways, and his utter incapability to actual do the tasks at hand. I think above all what really grinds my gears is that I feel as though I can have his job!! He has a master's degree (in something i do not know) but has the professional etiquette of a middle school student.

Idk... Pray that he doesn't irk my whole entire soul for the next few months. LOL

Au reviour...

Blessed and Accomplished

I've come to find that I'm growing a lot as an individual in so many ways, but I find myself growing spiritually more than anything else.

I've always been a 'christian' but I never was truly a christian until I became older and went through my own trials and tribulations. This past few months has definitely taught me that through adversity comes great strength and knowledge.

And now because everything I've experienced I'm able to witness and give my own personal testimony about how God has worked in my life. I've also noticed that God has blessed me in so many small ways.

I've gained a greater appreciation for the all things that I'm blessed with and I'm more thankful for the everyday things in my life, like my boyfriend Marcely. We've been together so long that its easy to forget why your with someone, why they make you happy and how to continuously make them happy. But I'm more thankful for him now that I'm growing more in my faith. Sometimes I feel as God has blessed me with someone who was specifically molded for me. He's there to help me when I'm weak, build me up where I'm lacking as well as admire me for my strengths and everything that I can bring to the table as a woman. I'm extremely blessed.

I'm also excelling more at work. I went from just being someone who comes in, does their work, then leaves. But now I'm more into helping the people that are my clients. It's becoming easier to talk with them about their problems and goals as well as share my own personal journey with them. My bosses are also viewing me as a an asset instead of a worker. I've also have the chance to incorporate my community service efforts into my job which is great!

God has also opened doors for me regarding a lot of things I would like to achieve. My number one goal is getting into graduate school and God has even opened doors for me to walk through regarding this. I went to a Drexel Open House and met with the Chairs of the program that I would like to join and they were so overwhelmingly warm and open to me that I knew that I was meant to meet them and build a relationship with them.

Even though I'm grateful for all that changing in my life, I'm most grateful for what has happened to me as person. I'm waaay more patient. I mean I've always been a patient person but now I'm even more patient with things that are frustrating to me. I also tend to not get upset over things that others would flip out over; which is crazy to me because I used to snap at the drop of the hat. I recently got my wallet stolen....and quite honestly I did what i had to do and didn't even care that it was missing. I've also been without a debit card for three weeks now because Wachovia mailed it to the wrong address and now i have to wait an extra week to get it... my response: Oh well. LOL

Its crazy how things are changing and I'm so happy. I pray that god continues to make strides in my life for the better :)

Why helllllllllooooooooooooooooooo...

Hello everyone!

My name is Lanna and I'm new to this whole blogspot thing. I've had a xanga before but this seems to be a little more personal and intimate.

Recently I've been trying to get my life together. I'm looking to enter into grad school in the fall for MFT, thats marriage and family therapy for those who don't know; and one day get my certification in sex therapy. I'm really into the subject so most definitely look for some interesting posts and questions regarding the subject.

But as an introduction to moi, here is a post of 25 random things about your truly:

1. I'm originally from South Jersey and I'm never going back. :P
2. I went to La Salle University, not because i wanted to, but because they paid for me to go.

12. Now that you know this about my friends, I would never bring my two group of friends together.
13.I used to have a serious complex about my body. When I was younger I used to overeat and drink a slim fast with every full meal. So sad but true. :(
